Today is my birthday. I’m not afraid or ashamed of my age. On the contrary! I’ve worked hard to make it this far (although, in the scheme of life, it’s not far at all). Some women don’t like getting older and want to remain “29” forever ~ or some such number.
Not me. I don’t want to be 29 again. Not that being 29 was a bad year or anything, I just don’t want to be that age again. I’m happy being 32.
And I’m happy to be turning 33. I’m thinking the closer I get to 40, the less people will call me a baby.
In honor of my birthday today, I thought it would be fun to think of 33 less-than-known facts about me. Some of them are fun and some of them are more like “did I really need to know that?”.
You’ve been warned. (there is nothing of a personal nature in the following declarations. Have no fear.)
1. I really love my back and legs to be massaged.
2. I enjoy people playing with my hair. And rubbing my scalp. Ahhh, I love it all!
3. My favorite dessert is strawberry shortcake.
4. I love the color green. And yellow. And blue….oh who am I kidding? I love the whole rainbow!
5. I can’t sleep on the side of a bed closest to the door. I keep feeling like someone is going to sneak up on me. So I make my husband sleep on that side (for if someone does come in, they’ll get him first…).
6. I have a very sarcastic sense of humor.
7. When I’m going up the stairs, and all of the lights have been turned off, I usually have an uncontrollable urge to run up the stairs. And keep looking back over my shoulder.
8. Even though I love to sew, I’d much rather make a whole new garment then to mend it. I know, that’s make no sense. But it’s true.
9. I love tea! Hot tea, cold tea…love it! (except for Chamomile. Ew!) And it’s not unusual for me to have a glass of iced tea at the same time I have a mug of hot tea. My kids think I’m weird. I tell them to watch out, ‘cause who do they think they’re going to be like when they grow up?
10. # 5, however crazy it may sound, is the truth. Just ask Adam.
11. I think fast on my feet. My older sister used to get so mad at me because I could think of a come-back much faster then she could.
12. I like change. It livens up life a bit. The same old same old gets boring after awhile.
13. I am also getting old enough to recognize that not all change is a good thing. And that boring is not all that bad.
14. I usually succumb to the urge in #7.
15. I injured the tendon in my right knee a few years ago and it still hurts. I suppose it always will since tendons don’t really heal.
16. I can type 72 words a minute.
17. I have very bad astigmatism and have had to wear glasses since I was 7 years old.
18. My right leg is a bit shorter then my left and cause some bad lower back pain.
19. I with I could have enough money to support a fabric addiction.
20. I was born with nerve damage in my right ear and I have a 60% hearing loss in that ear. I wore a hearing aid for a time because of it, but I don’t anymore. I have my reasons.
21. I LOVE having a house full of children. And I really truly want more! I simply can’t imagine “being done”.
22. We have lived in this house for almost 8 1/2 years and I can count on one hand how many times the windows have been washed.
23. My style and tastes are changing. I actually like brown now, when I used to hate it. I would love to re-paint some of the rooms in our house to reflect this change. But I’m too chicken. And too lazy.
24. I still dislike brown siding on houses, though.
25. Adam can always tell how bad (or good) of a day I’ve had when I get out of the shower (supposing I take a shower at night). The worse the day was, the hotter the water gets, and the more red my skin turns.
26. If I were to have a “career” later in life, I would be a midwife. Or a quilt shop owner. Maybe both?
27. Since I was very little, I have wanted to be 2 things most of all: a wife and a mother. While most girls were thinking of their careers and what they “wanted to do when they grow up”, I wasn’t. I didn’t want a career the way most people do. I simply wanted to be a wife and mother (never mind that there is nothing “simple” about being one!!!)
28. I don’t wear a watch anymore, nor have I for many years. Yet when I did, I always wore it on my right wrist even though I’m right handed.
29. I have one or two gray hairs. But I’m sure they’ll catch up to me later.
30. I sleep better with some kind-of white noise being heard. But my husband doesn’t. So we compromise: I sleep better in the summer when the fans are blowing and he sleeps better in the winter when it’s dead quiet. Unless I’m pregnant, then all bets are off!
31. I love black licorice, in any form.
32. Adam and I rarely argue. Not because we’re really special people. We just don’t.
33. Growing up, there were 3 things that I always have known about my future husband: he will be taller than me (Adam is 4” taller), he will have dark eyes (he has dark, dark green eyes. I call them “murky green” but he prefers “hazel”.), and he will either be a farmer or a preacher (Adam is the pastor of our church and he enjoys gardening). Please don’t ask me how I knew this, I just always have.
Did you actually make it this far?? Wow, you must be really bored, eh?
Now go celebrate my birthday and eat some strawberry shortcake.
Or good chocolate.
Either one works well.
I’m with you, Jennifer! There’s no shame in growing older. (I’m 50.)
