I know it been some time since I posted. I haven’t looked at the date, but I’m sure it’s been since Caleb was born or soon after that. I’m sorry! Things have been good here, just busy.
I have been doing a lot of sewing lately, for the girls and for my desire to just make something. There is a contest over at Stitched in Color (the button Celebrate Color is on my side bare) that I’m making things for and you’ll know when I’m done, for I’ll be posting things here.
I’ve also been reading many different quilt blogs and I’m really enjoying them! The ones that are my favorites are Stitched in Color, Lollyquiltz, Quilt Dad, In Color Order, Our Cozy Nest (and Nicole is giving a give away on her blog, in celebrations of her quilt being published on the Moda Bake Shop!), and Cut to Pieces, Crazy Mom Quilts. Of course, there is also the Moda Bake Shop which is packed full of free tutorials of patterns for quilts, anything home décor and much more! As you can see, the quilt bug has bitten me hard! I’m not complaining, though.
I’ve also “wised up” and I’m organizing my stash of fabric. I’m wanting to make all of these things, but I’m always thinking “I don’t have anything to make that with”. WRONG! I have a 4 drawer filing cabinet full of fabric (that I did color organize once upon a time) and another large tote full of what wouldn’t fit in the drawers. But it is so jumbled that I don’t know what I have or how much or exactly what will go with what. So I am now going through each color, cutting everything up and putting them into 1 of 5 categories: 1. large enough to not cut up (maybe for a backing or something), 2. a fat quarter (18” x 21”), 3. a “layer cake” (10” x 10” square), 4. a “charm” (5” x 5” square), and 5. a “jelly roll” strip (2.5” x wide of fabric). Why these measurements, you ask? Because these are the most used dimensions of pre cut fabric found in many of todays quilt patterns.
I’ve gone through the colors pink, red, and brown of my stash and I must admit that I’m shocked at how much I have. And I still have yellow, blue, black, white, purple, green, and teal to go through! ( I have very little yellow and no orange or grey) I have also been saving the scraps that don’t fit into any of those measurements (but are not stupidly small, either) and have been putting those into gallon sized jars, with each jar being for one color.
I told Adam yesterday that the bad news is I already need large containers to hold my pre cut fabrics (since I have 7 colors to still go through, with blue being my largest pile). The good news is I don’t need to buy any more fabric to make the things that I want to. I did, of course, leave room to add the colors that I’m lacking, such as yellow, orange, and grey. I girl has to have options, right? I’ll most likely never have a stash the rivals a fabric store, like this one, but I’d like to at least have the option of all the colors.
I wonder if he believes me?
