It takes time and thought to write stuff. Well, at least it takes time. And that is something I seem to have little of these days. I’m finally feeling pregnant and at 4 months, it’s about time. I can’t seem to get enough sleep. Even when I don’t wake up at night (which is rare). And things keep reoccurring around here: like laundry, the children are hungry, the house needs to be cleaned, the grass keeps growing….You know, abnormal things like that. I just can’t seem to keep up. So that’s explains my absence here.
There have been some inquiries about Grace. She is doing fine, now. She had a real bad kidney infection that started the day we were leaving PA. She said she felt sick to her stomach and ever declined her chicken nuggets from McD’s, so I knew she wasn’t good. She slept most of the day and night in the car. When we stopped at a rest stop sometime early Thursday morning, she complained that her side hurt. But being in southern Michigan, what was I to do? I tried to make her as comfy as possible and we went to sleep. We were stopping at Mackinac City on our way home and for the 3 days there, she was still not feeling well. It was odd though, she would be very tired and not hungry for most of the day. But by supper and bed time, she was feeling and looking better. I obviously had no clue what was wrong. We got home late Saturday and on Sunday (Father’s Day), both she and Adam were sick.
On Monday, she still refused to eat. So she laid down for a nap and about 30 min later, she came in crying and clutching her side, saying it hurt. She still had a high fever, so I called to doctor’s office and made and appointment for 45 min. later. Once there, the doctor looked her over and proceeded to admit her to the hospital. We were there Monday night, all day Tuesday, and went home Wednesday afternoon. The diagnosis was she had a very bad kidney infection. The worst part, though (as if seeing your little girl in pain and in the hospital wasn’t enough, right?), was that it took 18 tries to get a working IV in her. It was horrible! It was not for lack of ability on the nurses, Paramedics, doctors and the like, it was that she was dehydrated and has small, rolling veins. I saw every one of the 18 pokes, and her veins truly did disappear once the needle was in!
Anyway, the infection was bad, that they wanted us to come back about 12 day later (after the infection was cleared up) to get an x-ray of her kidneys to see if it was going to be an ongoing problem or not. It was quite an ordeal just to get her on that table. First, they gave her a medicine that gives her temporary amnesia (it was the same medicine they gave her for the 18th and last poke the previous time we visited them. It didn’t not go well!). It always comes in a syrup form and for Grace, that’s not a good thing. She has always fought syrups of any kind. But she took it pretty well this time around. She only gagged 3 times. Then, once that medicine had kicked in, they wheeled her down to the x-ray room. There they gave her the sleeping gas. Once she was out, they put an IV in to get the dye in her so they could see what they needed to see. All in all, it took about 30 minutes for the x-ray itself. We were there for about 3 1/2 hours. The beginning stuff and the recovery took up the rest of the time.
The out come of all this is that she is fine. Apparently it was just a UTI gone bad. The infection had to be in her system for quite awhile for there to be such a concentration of e-coli in her urine. Malachi has a doctor’s appointment tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see how she reacts to the nurses. Not that any of them were bad or anything. It’s just with it taking 18 tries during her hospital stay to get a working IV in her, that would be traumatic for anyone.
You know what I just thought of? He needs is shots tomorrow. Maacah is the one who usually gets more upset about the shots then the one getting them. She might have some competition now. I sure hope not. One drama queen is all I can handle.
Editors note: Grace did beautifully! No one would have guested all that had happened to her by the way she acted! Bravo little girl!
